Providers

What is FamilyNutritionTalk.com? The purpose of this site is to help parents, families, and teens work through all of the challenges that arise while achieving and maintaining a healthy weight.  We produce a daily podcast, which you can listen to on FamilyNutritionTalk.com or  iTunes,  that answers questions we receive regarding family nutrition and weight management.  Inger and Jonah, both Registered Dietitians specialized in family nutrition and weight management (see About page), host the podcasts.

FamilyNutritionTalk.com partners with physicians, pediatricians, and other health care providers as an extension of their in-house nutrition team.  The knowledge behind the podcasts is brought to you by Foundations Family Nutrition (Foundations), an innovative medical nutrition counseling center in Cambridge, Massachusetts.   Foundations specializes in working with entire families to treat or prevent overweight as well as other medically-related nutrition issues and sports nutrition.

Who is this site for?

  • Families with children of all ages struggling with overweight
  • Teens who would like to work on achieving a healthy weight
  • Families who would like to be super fit, have high energy, and maintain healthy weights

We can supplement what you do in your office! The reason we felt the need for FamilyNutritionTalk.com is that we want to reach out to our patients daily in order to keep them motivated, remind them of their goals, and answer their questions.  Let us do the reaching out for you in your office.  Our podcasts will help increase the chances that your patients will do well at follow-up visits.  Your patients will get sound nutrition information from our podcasts that will be extracted from our experiences over the past six years helping over 3,000 kids and families with weight management.  By working with entire families, we have gained a wealth of knowledge and experienced amazing success.

Do you know what to say for nutrition and weight management in your office? We have found that in most cases, providers say no or that what they are doing is not working.  Foundations Family Nutrition is the author of The Pediatric Nutrition Toolkit™, a series of more than 30 handouts designed for providers to work with children and families to maintain and/or achieve a healthy weight.  Each handout addresses only one topic (i.e. breakfast), which makes it manageable to cover in a busy pediatric practice.  The handouts are yours to use for free if you complete the in person or over the phone training.  The Toolkit has been implemented and tested in over 50 pediatric offices affiliated with Children’s Hospital of Boston.  The daily podcasts on FamilyNutritionTalk.com will complement the material.  Another option is to buy our handouts in book format, which you can give to patients.  The book also comes with a CD audio version that teens or families can choose to listen to instead of reading the material.  Insurance companies will oftentimes sponsor the purchase of the books for your patients.

Our nutrition philosophy: We teach children, teens, and entire families how to eat healthfully and the importance of physical activity for life-long health.  Eating healthfully and in a way that keeps blood sugars balanced will provide more energy and greater satiety, which in return lead to a healthy weight.  We do not put kids or teens on “diets,” as this could possibly lead to sneaking behaviors, short-term instead of long-term behavior changes, and feelings of deprivation that can cause binging and ultimately weight gain.  We also do not tell people what do, but will instead help individuals and families figure out what changes they would like to make based on their goals and readiness to change.  We will show or explain why specific changes might be beneficial and then they can decide if they are ready or want to make the changes.  Every teen and family is different so we try to find what will work for them versus trying to get them to fit into our pre-molded lifestyle!
